A Life at at Sea - Underway Again

How will you be spending the next month? I’ll be out to sea for the next few weeks, so no posts for a while. Just got finished watching the Chargers come from behind victory. Great win, and glad to see them keep up that winning streak over the Raiders. Next up for them is the Dolphins.

Unfortunately, the Padres lost today to finish with the third worst record in baseball. Looks like a long offseason for them. My offseason predictions? Bud Black is probably gone. As long as Hoffman doesn’t ask for an outrageous contract, he’ll be back. I can’t see the team getting rid of Brian Giles, since he’s the only guy on the roster who follows the “Moneyball” high on-base percentage philosophy that management loves. I have a bad feeling that Kevin Towers may get the ax as GM. We’ll see how everything pans out.

I’ll be back in about a month. Take care and keep in touch.

Collection Highlight: 1974 Topps Dave Winfield GAI Graded Rookie Card

1974 Topps Dave Winfield RC

Here’s a look at the rookie card for the Padres first real superstar. That of course is Dave Winfield. He was drafted 4th overall by the Padres in 1973 and went straight to the majors - he was one of the rare players who never played an inning in the minor leagues. Like Tony Gwynn, Winfield also played basketball in college, starring for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

I never saw Winfield in a Padre uniform. In fact, I always thought he was a product of the Yankees system. It wasn’t until I was in junior high did I learn that Dave Winfield got his start playing for my beloved Padres. He spent eight seasons with the Friars, until he left for the Big Apple and a huge (for that time) 10 year, $23 million contract. Winfield still ranks second on the Padres all-time for home runs and RBI’s. He was also the third Padre to have his number retired, after Steve Garvey and Randy Jones.

I picked up this card three years ago for about $25. It is graded Near-Mint (7) by Global Authentication Inc (GAI). The current Beckett value of a GEM-Mint Winfield rookie card is $50.

My Tradelist is Now Up and Running

I finally got around to creating my tradelist. I’ve listed some of my football and baseball cards that are available for trade. Now bear in mind, this is still a work in progress. Time permitting, I’ll be able to add more in the near future. You won’t find any of my base cards listed. [...] Continue Reading…

Mailday: Gwynn, Kouzmanoff, Garvey, Morton, Peavy cards

This week was pretty good for me.  I was able to pick up some great Padres cards on Ebay for some really decent prices.

I’ve been on a Kevin Kouzmanoff kick lately.  I was able to get five of his autographed rookie cards.  The sell price was between $4-$7 (including shipping) so his cards are still pretty cheap.  He’s having [...] Continue Reading…

Wally Joyner Resigns as Padres Hitting Coach

1998 SPX Finite "Radiance" Wally Joyner
This is becoming a Friar tradition.  For the third time in as many years, the Padres will have to look for a new hitting coach.  Last year, Wally Joyner stepped in to replace the fired Merv Rettenmund.  Rettenmund replaced Dave Magadan as the Padres hitting coach in 2006.  Magadan, as some of you may know, is enjoying his new [...] Continue Reading…

Collection Highlight: 2004 Bowman Philip Rivers Autographed Card

2004 Bowman Rookie Autograph Philip Rivers

In honor of Philip Rivers’ outstanding game last night, I decided to highlight one of his rookie cards.  In this case, his 2004 Bowman Autographed card.  A great rookie autograph, especially since the autograph is on the card itself and not on a sticker.  With the progress he has made this season, the current Beckett value of this card [...] Continue Reading…

Set Building: 2008 Upper Deck Football

As a new project, I decided to see if I could complete the 2008 Upper Deck Football set.  I’ve always had an itch to complete a few sets to complement my collection.  However, I never could find a set to get started with.  Upper Deck’s sets have always caught my eye, so I decided to begin my foray into [...] Continue Reading…

Kouzmanoff Breaks Record Held By Gene Tenace

1980 Topps Gene Tenace2007 Topps Heritage Kevin Kouzmanoff
Congratulations to Padres 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff for setting a new Padres team record.  He was hit by a pitch for the 14th time this season.  This broke the old Padre season record established way back in 1977 by Gene Tenace.  For those of you too young to remember Tenace, he was immortalized in a quote from the comedy Anchorman [...] Continue Reading…
