With the amateur draft almost a month away, I wanted to highlight a couple of prospects not named Stephen Strasburg. While I hope Scott Boras’ posturing will scare away the Nationals and Mariners, odds are that one of those teams will draft the best prospect ever.
So, who’s the best of the rest? Even if they miss out on the Stephen Strasburg sweepstakes, at #3, the Padres have a shot at drafting a high impact player.
Grant Green is a shortstop from USC. He’s considered one of the top position players available in the draft. Last season he killed the Cape Cod League. With the Padres not having a lot of SS options in their system, he’s a guy they can draft and expect to advance fairly quickly.
Tyler Matzek is rated as the best high school lefthander in this year’s draft class. While he may take longer to get to the majors than a Strasburg or Green would, he would certainly add to the Padres arsenal of young arms.
