Mailday: 2007 Topps ’52 Chase Headley Red Ink Autographed Card

2007 Topps ’52 #52SCH Chase Headley Red Ink Auto #’d 17/52

This weekend’s mail brought me another Ebay pickup – a Chase Headley autographed card from the 2007 Topps 1952 Rookie Edition set. I already have the standard autograph, which I added to my collection about 3 years ago.  This is the red ink variation, numbered 17 of 52. Other than cards from 2007-2008, there aren’t a lot of higher end Chase Headley cards out there (autographs, relics, jerseys, inserts, etc).  I’m hoping that his 2012 performance forces Topps to add more Chase Headley to their 2013 sets.

What a career so far for Chase Headley.  He arrived in the big leagues with a lot of expectations from the fan base.  “Savior of the Franchise”, and all that jazz.  He never quite lived up to those lofty expectations.  Heading into this season, the Padres were giving out contract extensions like Halloween candy.  Cory Luebke, Cameron Maybin, and Nick Hundley were shown the money.  Everyone except for Mr. Headley.  Some nonsense about organizational depth at 3B.

So what does the guy once anointed as “The Savior” do?  He does Savior-like things. You know, figure out how to hit in Petco to have the best offensive season in your career and in the process become the team’s 2012 MVP, win a Gold Glove, and win a Silver Slugger.  In the span of a few months, Chase Headley turned himself into the face of the franchise and a more than likely, a very wealthy individual.
