It became official today. The Padres announced that future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux will be traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor leaguers and cash. The Padres have until October 15th to choose two minor leaguers from a list of five. Unfortunately for Padre fans, top pitching prospects James McDonald & Scott Elbert are apparently not on the list.
Obviously the Padres made a move to get some semblance of value for Maddux. As everyone already knows, this season is a lost cause. There’s a chance he could retire at the end of this season. Also, they probably wouldn’t have gotten draft pick compensation for him because he probably would have accepted arbitration if he decided to hang on for another year.
As a Padre fan, I relish the fact that Maddux reached the 350 win plateau in a Padre uniform. Hopefully, guys like Jake Peavy and Chris Young watched his approach to the game. The entire staff benefited from having a guy like Maddux on the mound. I cheered wildly for him as a Padre. Now I’ll boo him just as eagerly in that hideous Dodger blue.
