Gates Returns to Practice, Merriman Still Troubled by Knee Pain

2007 Bowman #104 Antonio GatesSome good and bad news coming from the Chargers today.  First the good news.   Antonio Gates was taken off the Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list and was able to participate in practice today.  A huge boost to the offense as having a healthy Antonio Gates opens up the middle of the field for the rest of the Bolt offense.  While he might not be able to play in an exhibition game just yet, the Chargers are certainly hopeful the All-Pro tight end can be ready for the season opener.

2007 Upper Deck #158 Shawne MerrimanNow, unfortunately, the bad news.  It looks like Shawne Merriman is visiting Dr. James Andrews regarding some pain in his surgically repaired right knee.  As most sports fans know, whenever you hear about an athlete visiting Dr. Andrews, you just hope for the best.  While the Chargers do have some depth at linebacker, you just can’t replace a defensive force like Shawne Merriman.  Hopefully, his knee problems won’t linger into the regular season.
