Collection Highlight: SGC Graded 1961 Fleer Chargers Team Set

One of the sets that I am trying to complete is the 1961 Fleer Football Chargers Team Set.  I’m trying to collect the team set with every card graded by SGC.  I really like the SGC slabs.  The black background makes the cards really stand out.  At first I never intended to collect the entire team set.  I won the Charlie Flowers card #156 off Ebay and was hooked on both the design of the card and how great it looked in the SGC slab.  So I slowly began collecting the rest of the team set.  For those of you unfamiliar with the set, the 1961 Fleer set was the only set produced by Fleer that had players from both the AFL and NFL.   Fleer’s other football sets in the 60′s only featured players from the AFL.

Here’s a list of what I have so far:

  • #156 Charlie Flowers – SGC Grade 96 (Mint 9)
  • #158 Don Norton – SGC Grade 92 (NM/Mint+ 8.5)
  • #160 Paul Maguire – SGC Grade 96 (Mint 9)
  • #161 Ernie Wright – SGC Grade 92 (NM/Mint+ 8.5)
  • #165 Volney Peters – SGC Grade 96 (Mint 9)

I’m still on the hunt for the following cards.  It has been pretty slow as these cards are pretty hard to find (especially in a decent SGC grade).

Jack Kemp (#155), Paul Lowe (#157), Howard Clark (#159), Ron Mix (#162), Fred Cole (#163), and Jim Sears (#164).

If you happen to come across any of these cards in an SGC slab, please let me know!
