As I peruse my collection, there are times where I am reminded that great players have come through the little hamlet of San Diego to play professional baseball. This is one of those times.
In 2006, Topps had a very cool 25 card insert in their flagship set – the Rookie of the Week. The cards were designed to resemble each respective player’s Topps rookie card. The only variation was the photograph.
Personally, I like this picture of the Wizard over the one used in his 1979 rookie card. When I look at this photo, I can almost imagine the Padres brass saying to themselves “See, we have to trade this guy. He’s diminutive. And he’s not a good batter. He holds the bat upside down for goodness sakes!!” (Editor’s note: Padres management probably never said that. It is purely speculation on my part.)
Best thing about this card: It’s Ozzie Smith in a brown taco Padres uniform!! Since he only spent four seasons in San Diego, there’s probably only about 7-8 cards in existence that prove he used to be a Padre. Which in the grand scheme of things, makes this card not that valuable.
