This is a card from my Vincent Jackson rookie collection. It is the Black Refractor from the 2005 Topps Chrome set. The Black Refractors are serial numbered to 100 cards (the one in my collection is 82/100).
I decided to spotlight this card today, because as you may have heard, Mr. Jackson was lured to Tampa Bay with a five year contract worth $55,555,555. Can’t say I blame him for taking that contract. As a Chargers fan, it’s disappointing to see such a prolific offensive threat leave. However, I understand the realities of today’s NFL. With the salary cap, the Chargers have a limited number of dollars to improve a team that has missed the playoffs the last two seasons. While a lot of fans will miss seeing VJax catching passes from Philip Rivers, the team has more pressing needs. By adding Robert Meachem (relatively cheaply) to a group featuring Rivers, Antonio Gates, Ryan Mathews, Malcolm Floyd, and Vincent Brown, the Chargers have a solid nucleus on offense. I’d much rather see available salary cap money spent on solidifying the offensive line, improving the pass rush, and improving the overall depth of the team.
