Today’s Collection Highlight features one of my favorite jersey cards. It’s from the 2002 Pacific Heads Up set and features four Chargers – Doug Flutie, Drew Brees, Ladainian Tomlinson, and Junior Seau. Pacific Trading Cards was a fairly small trading card company that was eventually bought by Donruss/Playoff.
Here is the front of the card, which has quarterbacks Doug Flutie and Drew Brees:
Here is a shot of the back of the card. It features jersey swatches of all-time Charger greats Junior Seau & Ladainian Tomlinson:
The back of the card is what really makes this card pop. I mean, come on, it’s two of the greatest Chargers ever. But, I really love the front. It brings back memories of 2001-2003 and what I like to call the “Charger Civil War”. Brees or Flutie, Flutie or Brees – who should be the Charger’s starter? For the non-Chargers fan, these seasons really divided the fan base into two distinct camps. Flutopians and the Breesians. If you scanned message boards during this time, the vitriol was almost as bad as this year’s elections. Seriously, things were ugly between the two sides.
Personally, I was a Breesian. My rationale? We were a relatively young team. I wanted to let Brees get the starts, take his lumps, and learn from his mistakes so he could eventually develop into a viable starter. In my mind there was no reason to let Doug Flutie play and add a couple of wins, just so we could barely miss the playoffs.
Whose side were you on Charger fans?
