Eric Owens was a Padre for two seasons. 1999-2000. Two pretty awful seasons that followed the magical 1998 postseason run. I’ve mostly blocked out the bad memories from those two years. But boy, do I remember Eric Owens. To call him a gritty fan favorite would be an understatement.
Three things I remember fondly about Eric Owens. First, his uniform was always dirty. That usually happened when you were scrappy on the basepaths and on the field of play. Second, was eye black. He always had that on , even during night games. As if having a dirty uniform wasn’t enough to show everyone that you were the epitome of hustle. Third, not only was he a hustler, but a thief. During a game in 1999, he stole home plate in full view of everyone. Don’t bother me with the details, but its true. It’s one of those memories that I can see vividly in my mind, except I cannot remember minute details like the opponent, opposing pitcher, who was at bat, etc.
One other thing. The Padres happen to be in Seattle right now, doing battle against their arch nemesis from the AL. Guess who had the first hit at Safeco Field? That’s right, the one and only Eric Owens. Take that, hated Mariners.
