Collection Highlight: 1994 Flair Wave of the Future Joey Hamilton
I’m in a 90’s kind of mood right now. So I figure I’d spotlight a card that exemplified the craziness of the 90’s insert era. Here’s Joey Hamilton’s card from the 1994 Flair ‘Wave of the Future” insert set. This was a 20 card insert set that highlighted some of the game’s hottest young stars. All cards featured the player superimposed over a dizzying wavy type background. The set was highlighted by a card featuring a young Alex Rodriguez. In addition to Joey Hamilton, the set featured another young Padre, 1B Dave Staton. Also, there were some guys that later went on to play with the Friars, such as Ryan Klesko, Chan Ho Park, and Chris Gomez.
Joey Hamilton was drafted 8th overall in 1992 from Georgia Southern. He made his debut in 1994 and finished 5th in NL Rookie of the Year voting. He would go on to play a role with the Padres playoff teams in 1996 and 1998. After the magical 1998 season, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in a deal that netted the Padres Woody Williams.
The design of the card is pure 1990’s. You really don’t see designs like this in any of today’s cards. It looks like Mr. Hamilton is about to be sucked into some alternate dimension. Unfortunately, the card shows him sans goatee, which is how I mostly remember him.
