With spring training in full swing, I think it’s time we take a look at a vintage Padre card. This is card #699 from the 1988 Topps set, highlighting the Padres Leaders from the previous season.
Featured on the card are Tony Gwynn and Benito Santiago. Both good choices to represent the Padres. In 1987, Gwynn was THE MAN for the Padres. When you look at the back of the card, you’ll notice that in 1987, Mr. Padre led the team in almost every offensive category. Gwynn batted .370 with 56 stolen bases, winning a batting title and a Gold Glove. Get this – he had 680 plate appearances that year and struck out only 35 times! Benito Santiago was no slouch that year either. He had a 34 game hitting streak (longest ever for a catcher) and was the unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year.
